In 2007, we lived in Paguate village and my workshop was separate from our house. One day I was working on jewelry and I stopped for a break. There was one particular sherd that was my favorite. It was a larger piece and the design was spectacular. As I was admiring this pottery sherd, I began wondering what the entire pot might have looked like. As I was turning the sherd over in my hands, I hear a voice out loud say, “Make it into jewelry.” The voice was so clear, as if someone was standing right next to me. There was no one around me and I knew it was the Creator speaking to me.
My first thought was, "how am I supposed to do this?" Over the years, I’ve seen people that would sell the actual ancient pottery sherds as jewelry. They would drill holes in the artifact and string it on a cord or they would file the edges of the artifact and then set the sherd in a bezel and then sell that. I knew I couldn’t do that - it was wrong and culturally unacceptable to do that. Out loud, I said, “How can I do that? I can’t do that!” Immediately I was shown that if I used an overlay technique, I could interpret the sherd in sterling silver.
